Madison, Wisconsin, USA
In the days following the murder of George Floyd in neighboring Minnesota, thousands flocked to the streets in Madison, Wis. in outrage and solidarity. Among those leading the charge were a number of Black youth, five of whom were profiled in Madison Magazine’s August 2020 issue. I had the immense privilege of photographing three women included in the piece — Nalah McWhorter, Ayomi Obuseh and Sirena Flores. Read more on each of their contributions to the movement here.
Nalah McWhorter, president of the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Black Student Union, stands in front of the Historical Society in her hometown of Racine, Wisconsin.
Organizer for Black youth-led activist group Impact Demand and University of Wisconsin-Madison student Ayomi Obuseh raises a Black Power fist on Madison’s East Washington Avenue. The state capitol building can be seen behind her.
Sirena Flores, artist and University of Wisconsin-Madison student, stands in front of a mural she painted on State Street in downtown Madison. The mural was part of an initiative to turn boarded-up storefronts into works of art as an act of solidarity and protest.
